Hard thinks about 1–2 seconds per move. It weighs material, pawn progress and pressure on your king's face, and it uses twists.

Moves

Rules in this demo

A turn is one piece move or one twist, never both.
Pieces move as in chess but stay on their face. Knights jump but can't leave the face either.
A twist must move at least one piece. It carries enemy pieces too.
Pawns keep an orange arrow: their forward direction turns with the twist. Pawns promote to queens at the face edge.
Check only counts on the king's own face. A move or twist that leaves your king in check is illegal.
No legal move or twist: checkmate if in check, otherwise stalemate. No castling or en passant.
